As the festive season is already well and truly upon us, I thought this the appropriate time to compare the differences between Christmas here and in New Zealand, or at least the observations that I have so far been able to make.
Obviously for me the biggest difference is the weather. When I think of Christmas thoughts go to trips to the beach or a lake. Obviously this year I am in for a whole new experience. Although I think of Christmas as a time to be outdoors, it feels right to this year be surrounded in snow as Christmas draws nearer. Given that most Christmas decorations and songs originate from the Northern Hemisphere they tend to make reference to snow so it always odd putting up decorations of snow men and drawing snowflakes on Christmas cards when the sun is blazing bright outside! I am a big fan of the Christmas markets that pop up in main European centres at this time of the year with Riga being no exception. I enjoy walking around looking at the different crafts for sale whilst drinking mulled wine. It is certainly a far cry from New Zealand, as are Christmas carollers. Although there are some people singing Christmas carols, they are not in the same numbers as the carollers throughout Europe. I am not sure if it is a result of the recession, which I am in no doubt plays a large part, but Christmas just seems a whole lot less commercialised here in Latvia, where traditions seem to rule over a commercialised Christmas. In the weeks leading up to Christmas in New Zealand we are constantly bombarded with retailers advertising Christmas. It is near on impossible to move in shopping malls and many are left questioning on Christmas Day if the stress leading up to the day even makes it all worthwhile. The main part of the Christmas celebration for most is a large dinner on the 25th. The 24th for many is an opportunity to return home to their the towns they were brought up in and catch up with friends who are all brought home for the same reason. It is also smart to avoid shops, with mad dashes for last minute gift shopping. For many, Christmas eve is also the one time in the year in which they attend church, with it a tradition in many families, religious or not, to go to the local church to sing Christmas carols. I am led to believe by most that here in Latvia the main celebration takes place on the 24th. I am also under no illusion that this is a time to be spent indoors, sheltering from the cold outside. Although not so much of a tradition in my own family, it is popular for many to enjoy the day at the beach, with a traditional Christmas meal of ham of the bone, turkey and lamb being replaced by a traditional NZ BBQ. For all its differences at this time of the year, I look forward to embracing Christmas in Europe and only hope that most people can forget the current situation in Latvia for a day and instead enjoy the opportunity to be around their friends and family. I know for me being a long way from home it is important to be close to friends on this day. Skaidrs, ka man lielākais kontrasts šķiet laika apstākļi. Kad iedomājos Ziemassvētkus, prātā nāk došanās uz pludmali vai ezeru (Jaunzēlandē šajā laikā ir vasaras vidus). Šogad saskaros ar pavisam citu pieredzi – manā uztverē Ziemassvētki saistās ar laika pavadīšanu ārā, bet tagad šķiet pareizi, ka visapkārt ir sniegs. Tā kā lielākā daļa Ziemassvētku rotājumu un dziesmu radušās ziemeļu puslodē, tajos parasti ir sniega tēma. Man vienmēr šķitis dīvaini izmantot rotājumus ar sniegavīriem un uz kartītēm zīmēt sniegpārslas, ja ārā spīd spoža saule. Mani sajūsmina Ziemassvētku tirdziņi, kas ir lielākajās Eiropas pilsētās, arī Rīgā. Labprāt pa tiem staigāju, apskatot dažādus amatnieku darinājumus un nobaudot karstvīnu. Nezinu, vai recesijas rezultātā, kam noteikti ir sava ietekme, Latvijā Ziemassvētki šķiet stipri mazāk komercializēti. Varbūt tāpēc, ka te ir spēcīgākas tradīcijas. Jaunzēlandē pirmssvētku nedēļās mūs bombardē tirgotāji, kas reklamē Ziemassvētkus. Tirdzniecības centros ir gandrīz neiespējami pārvietoties, un Ziemassvētku dienā daudzi jautā, vai svētki ir to ieskaņu pavadošā stresa vērti. Lielākajai daļai svinību galvenais notikums ir plašas pusdienas 25. decembrī. 24. decembrī daudzi atgriežas pilsētās, kurās uzauguši, un izmanto iespēju satikties ar draugiem. Lielai daļai Ziemassvētku vakars ir vienīgā reize gadā, kad viņi dodas uz baznīcu. Daudzās ģimenēs ir arī tradīcija iet uz vietējo baznīcu un dziedāt Ziemassvētku dziesmas. Esmu sapratis, ka Latvijā galvenās svinības notiek 24. decembrī. Tāpat nešaubos, ka te šis laiks jāpavada telpās, patveroties no laukā valdošā aukstuma. Manā ģimenē tādas tradīcijas nav, taču daudzi citi Jaunzēlandē Ziemassvētku dienā labprāt dodas uz pludmali, tradicionālos svētku ēdienus – cūkas cisku ar kaulu, tītaru un jēra gaļu – aizvietojot ar bārbekjū. Visu šo atšķirību dēļ priecājos, ka Ziemassvētkus sagaidīšu Eiropā. Ceru, lielākā daļa cilvēku spēs aizmirst pašreizējo situāciju Latvijā un izbaudīt iespēju būt ģimenes un draugu lokā. Zinu, ka arī man, esot tālu no mājām, būs svarīgi šajā dienā būt kopā ar draugiem. Priecīgus Ziemassvētkus, lasītāji!
